Tamil New Year -2017

Today is the tamizh new year.  Every new year has a new name to it and this year it is called “Hevilambi “. It is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu Solar Calendar(Chitirai maasam/month). Popularly known as Puthandu,  Tamil New Year which usually falls on April 14th is an occasion that calls for celebration for Tamils all over the world. This is supposedly the day when Lord Brahma (the Creator of the world, according to Hindu mythology) started creation. People exchange greetings of ‘Puthandu Vazthukal’ (Happy New Year) with great fervor on this day.

The highlight of Tamil New Year Festival  among the tamil speaking people is the food . No festival is ever complete without an assortment of dishes .’Maanga Pachadi’ (a dish made of raw mangoes, jaggery and neem flowers) is the special dish of the day, which tastes sweet, salty, spicy , sour and bitter at the same time. This favorite dish of mine symbolizes  – LIFE which is a mixed bag of these flavorsnew.
